September 2025 Editorial Notes

International

New schedules for Eurostar services on its Paris – Brussels – Amsterdam/ Koln / Dortmund routes will come into effect from September 7. Tables 18, 20 and 21 have been updated with the new timings. Journey times on the Paris to Brussels section have generally increased by up to four minutes.

Last month we reported that IC trains between Amsterdam and Berlin were to be upgraded to ICE status from November 1. Some media oulets now report that certain services may start sporting their upgraded status during September (Table 22).

Berlin Night Express has announced that its Stockholm to Berlin service will run on three additional days from October 31, specifically for German Christmas markets. All of these extra services will extend to and from Dresden (Table 50).

We understand that direct services between Subotica and Beograd may commence in early September (Tables 61 and 1360). Services were due to restart in November 2024, but this was delayed following the collapse of a canopy at Novi Sad station.

Great Britain

Further to last month’s news item regarding the problematic ground conditions in the Crewkerne area, South Western Railway has made further changes to its timetable between Yeovil and Exeter (Table 109). Until further notice services will only run every two hours west of Yeovil with extended journey times due to a lengthy speed restriction. The earlier decision to cancel all Crewkerne station calls has now been reversed with all trains once again serving Crewkerne.

West of England Tables 110 and 113 have been updated with the autumn schedules valid from September 15.

The Cumbrian Coast line between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness is currently blocked near Whitehaven due to a defect in the Bransty Tunnel. As a result, there will be a rail replacement bus service in operation between Workington and Sellafield until further notice resulting in extended journey times (Table 157).

France

All of our tables covering northern and western France have been updated with autumn schedules valid from September 1. Most tables for the rest of France are already valid through to the mid-December timetable change.

Italy

Long-distance trains (those shown with train numbers) have now all been updated but should be treated as subject to confirmation until September 30.

Spain

Short notice engineering work has required the closure of the line between Miranda de Ebro and Logrono until the end of September (Tables 654 and 689). Buses will convey passengers between the two stations during the closure.

Portugal

Travellers using the international Celta service between Porto and Vigo will now have to change trains at Viana do Castelo, but timings remain the same (Table 696).

Sweden

Rail services on the Uddevall to Stromstad route are suspended until April 20, 2026 (Table 739) due to the reconstruction of the electric power system at the Uddevalla railway yard. This is the latest phase of work which, since last spring, has mainly been taking place during evenings and overnight.

Germany

FlixTrain Table 927 has been updated with the latest schedules which have altered somewhat due to extensive engineering work currently affecting services to and from Berlin.

Poland

Independent operator RegioJet will be introducing services on various Polish routes from December 2025. However, from September 18 it will operate a pilot service running once a day in each direction between Warszawa and Krakow, timings for which will be found in Table 1065. Tickets can only be purchased on the operator’s website or mobile app.

Hungary

Hungarian national operator MAV has announced that Budapest Keleti station will close to all rail traffic from August 25 to September 20 so that essential engineering work can take place. Trains which normally call at Keleti will be diverted to other stations such as Kobanya felso, Zuglo, Kelenfold and Nyugati. Timetables for the duration of the closure are now available from MAV.

Turkey

Turkish Railways introduced a new timetable on its YHT high-speed train routes from August 15. The updated schedules will be found in Table 1570.

Rail passes

European pass operator Interrail has introduced a new version of its pass called the Interrail Plus Pass. With this new offering you will be able to use most trains across Europe and enjoy the added benefit of having your seat reservation costs for high-speed and popular routes covered. Initially there are two versions of the Plus Pass. The Global Plus Pass allows seven days of travel within one month. This pass allows you to book most seat reservations at no extra cost, and enjoy up to three additional credits to cover the reservation fees of some popular trains (one or two credits are required per seat). The Italy Plus Pass allows four days travel within one month and includes all seat reservation fees.
