Night trains on Norway’s Nordland Line may resume in January
SJ Norge expects to resume night trains between Trondheim and Bodø in mid-January 2027 at the earliest, following delays in preparing a replacement locomotive.
Night trains were suspended indefinitely in November 2024 after a rockslide at Finneidfjord the previous month destroyed a Di4 diesel locomotive. The remaining fleet was already struggling with age-related maintenance requirements, leaving insufficient locomotives to operate both day and night services. SJ prioritised daytime trains.
Norske tog has now completed the conversion of the first leased bi-mode locomotive from freight to passenger use, but it still requires approval from the Norwegian Railway Authority before delivery to SJ Norge. The operator expects to need a further two months for testing, driver training and other preparations before night services can resume.
