Bosnia Herzegovina / Croatia

Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ŽFBiH) and HŽ Passenger Transport have announced a new international train service connecting Sarajevo and Ploče, extending the existing high-speed route between Sarajevo and Čapljina. The new service will operate on weekends—Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays—beginning November 9, 2025.

Regular weekend operations will continue until June 25, 2026, after which the route will run daily as a seasonal service until August 31, 2026, catering for summer holiday traffic.

The timetable provides convenient options for weekend travellers:

  • Friday: Sarajevo (16:46) – Ploče (20:14)
  • Saturday: Ploče (05:05) – Sarajevo (08:35)
  • Sunday: Sarajevo (07:15) – Ploče (10:36)
  • Sunday: Ploče (15:40) – Sarajevo (19:07)

The extension of the Sarajevo–Čapljina line to the Croatian port city of Ploče offers passengers a faster, more comfortable, and affordable link between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic coast. The service is expected to attract both leisure travellers heading for the seaside and residents of the Neretva Valley seeking easier access to Sarajevo.

The full timetable for this service will be included in the forthcoming Winter 2025/2026 edition of the European Rail Timetable which will be available to order shortly.

Italy / Austria / Czech Republic

Arenaways and Leo Express are planning a new international passenger service linking Praha and Venezia from December 2027.

According to documents submitted to Italy’s Autorità di Regolazione dei Trasporti, the connection will include two daily trains in each direction—one daytime and one overnight—with an estimated journey time of around 12 hours. The route will cross Austria, serving key stations between Summerau on the Czech border and Villach near Italy, before entering the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

If authorised, the project will strengthen cooperation between Arenaways, based in Torino, and Leo Express, headquartered in Praha, while expanding international rail links between Central and Southern Europe. It will also contribute to the revival of night trains, a form of travel that has seen renewed interest across the continent in recent years.

Arenaways currently operates regional services between Cuneo, Saluzzo and Savigliano, while Leo Express runs trains across the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.

The proposed Praha–Venezia service will operate daily, year-round, with trains composed of six UIC first- and second-class carriages (around 400 seats) hauled by Vectron electric locomotives or similar. By linking major cities such as Praha, Linz, Udine and Venezia, the service aims to promote sustainable, cross-border rail travel and offer passengers a new, scenic route across Central Europe.

Germany / Poland

Reports in the German media over the weekend suggest that the Kulturzug / Pociągu do kultury between Berlin and Wrocław will be cancelled at the end of its current season. Each journey on the weekends only train, which has been in operation for the last 10 years, features a cultural performance such as a reading, performance or workshop. It is believed the last train will run on December 28. Given the number of new daily services linking Germany and Poland which are due to start at the December 2025 timetable change it is perhaps not surprising that the Kulturzug / Pociągu do kultury is to be withdrawn.

Great Britain

Just after 6am this morning, the Avanti West Coast operated 04:28 service from Glasgow Central to London Euston derailed at Shap in Cumbria. It is believed the train collided with a landslip. Services are currently terminating at Preston, and disruption is expected to continue for several days.
