Newslines, March 19, 2026 Arctic Adventure by Rail: Snälltåget’s Northern Lights Special

Rail travellers will have a rare opportunity to journey deep into the Arctic Circle this winter, as Snälltåget introduces a special overnight service from southern Sweden to northern Norway. Departing Malmö on November 23, the train runs via Stockholm before continuing north to Narvik, offering a seamless and scenic route into one of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes.

The journey includes key stops such as Kiruna, Abisko and Björkliden—all renowned for their excellent chances of witnessing the Aurora Borealis. Travelling overnight allows passengers to relax as they head north, waking up to snow-covered mountains and Arctic wilderness.

After crossing the Arctic Circle, passengers can spend several days exploring the region, with opportunities to combine the trip with accommodation, guided northern lights excursions and outdoor activities. The return service departs Narvik on November 27, retracing the route south.

On board, passengers can enjoy the comfort of the train’s dining car, Krogen, which serves hot meals in a relaxed setting. A self-service counter is also available, offering drinks, snacks and light refreshments throughout the journey.

While timetable details remain subject to change due to ongoing infrastructure works, this unique service promises a memorable way to experience Scandinavia in winter—combining the romance of rail travel with the natural spectacle of the northern lights.
