Newslines, March 11, 2026 Fire disruption keeps Glasgow Central high-level closed as low-level reopens

Following a full site assessment, rail services have through the low-level platforms of Glasgow Central station resumed this morning (March 11). However, the station’s high-level platforms will remain closed for the rest of the week after a significant fire at a neighbouring building on Union Street raised safety concerns.

Emergency services and engineers have been assessing the stability of the damaged building façade on Gordon Street. Until critical work by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Glasgow City Council is complete, rail operators cannot safely reopen the high-level section of the station.

The disruption means no trains will run to or from Glasgow Central’s high-level platforms for several days. Long-distance services operated by Avanti West Coast are currently starting and terminating at Motherwell railway station instead, with passengers able to reach the station using local services. Other operators, including ScotRail, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express, have also introduced temporary timetables and diversions.

Low level services have resumed through the station, helping restore some connectivity across Glasgow’s suburban rail network. Nevertheless, many routes that normally use the high-level platforms remain suspended or significantly reduced while investigations continue.

Network Rail says reopening the high-level station will depend on the outcome of safety inspections and structural assessments once emergency services have completed their work. In the meantime, passengers are advised to check before travelling and allow extra time for their journeys as the situation develops.
